These Historic Tuckahoe family photos with the Tavill family took place last year in April. I’m Sarah Creal, owner of Sarah Creal Photography and a Richmond family photographer. Stephanie and Olivia live in North Chesterfield (nearby where I live actually!) close to Midlothian. We met at Historic Tuckahoe for their spring family photos in the Richmond area. Historic Tuckahoe is known as Tuckahoe Plantation and Thomas Jefferson’s boyhood home. It sits on the edge of Henrico County and Goochland County, right along River Road.

They had booked one of my Black Friday sessions after finding me on Instagram. Stephanie and Olivia have two daughters, Keira, who was eight, and Lila, who was almost four. It was sticky and humid that day and kind of cloudy, but not too bad. There were lots of colorful flowers around Historic Tuckahoe. The family wore pastels and colors that worked well with everything blooming around us.
Olivia told me that one of the reasons she chose me was because I’m an occupational therapist. I make it known that I have done many family photoshoots with children with special needs. Keira has a developmental disability and usually uses a wheelchair, so my experience was especially important to their family.
Spring Family Photos Around Richmond, VA
We did most of their photos out in the main area in front of the tall flowering trees. Lila wore a bright pink romper, and Keira wore a purple short-sleeve jumpsuit.
From there, we went over to the long green archway and took some photos of the whole family. Stephanie wanted to make sure we got a few photos of Keira standing instead of in her wheelchair or sitting on the ground, so we did those there.
Then I put my cathedral quilt on the ground and had everyone snuggle, tickle one another and love on each other. We did a lot of tickling to get Keira smiling. At one point Stephanie held Lila upside down so she could kiss Olivia. Lila thought that was hilarious.
This whole session was really playful and silly, with a lot of snuggling and laughing.
Finishing Our Historic Tuckahoe Family Session
I like to finish family sessions by making sure the parents get a few photos together too. So the very last photos were of Stephanie and Olivia underneath the huge ivory azaleas.
After that, we started walking back toward the parking lot. Two dogs that live on the property were there, one white and one black. Lila really wanted to pet them. She sat down and rubbed the white dog’s belly for a little while before it trotted off.
Then we said goodbye!
