If you’re looking for a Williamsburg family photographer, the Stevens family’s photos at Colonial Williamsburg last May shows how much variety we can get in one location. I met this family years ago when their oldest son, Thayer, was just two! Since then, I have photographed them more than six times!
Rosa and her husband Jonathan brought their sons Thayer, Grant and Jackson to the photoshoot. Rosa’s parents, David and Corky, joined us too. Her sister Audrey and Audrey’s husband Tyler were also there. Jonathan is a Major in the U.S. Army, and this was our last session before their family moved.
Family Photos Around Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic Area
Colonial Williamsburg, or CW, is such a beautiful place to shoot family pictures! The gardens, fences and brick walls throughout the Historic Area are part of what makes it so special. Duke of Gloucester (DoG) Street, runs through the heart of it. South Boundary Street sits near the western end. We started in a garden behind some of the main colonial homes.
After, we move into the grassy area near where they keep the horses. There were little white flowers in the grass and an old rustic wood fence behind them as the perfect backdrop for some seated family photos. The weather was really nice, although it was a little humid that evening.
I instantly loved how coordinated everyone looked without feeling too matched. Rosa wore a yellow sleeveless jumpsuit, while Jonathan wore a navy shirt with khaki shorts.
The boys were in a mix of mint green, dusty blue, cream, navy and olive, which all worked really well together. Corky wore a light tan top with olive green pants, David wore a short-sleeve button-down with navy shorts, and Audrey chose a fitted mint green dress. Tyler wore a light blue shirt with cream shorts, pulling all of those soft colors together.
As a Williamsburg family photographer, I always start bigger family sessions with everyone together. I had them stand close, with Rosa and Jonathan holding onto the boys, Corky and David near Thayer, and Audrey and Tyler holding hands. I also had everyone look toward the kids for some of the photos before taking a few pictures of Audrey and Tyler by themselves.
Tyler lifted Grant into the air like an airplane while everyone watched him.
I also made sure to photograph David and Corky together. David had just finished a fight with cancer, and I wanted to celebrate him being happy and healthy.
Family Photos at the Governor’s Palace
We finished the session in front of the Governor’s Palace on the Great Lawn.
We let the boys run around and be silly. I photographed David with each of his grandsons, and Corky was as strong as ever swinging the boys around.
I also photographed Rosa and Audrey together. Love this sisters shot of them!
Followed by Rosa, Audrey, Corky and David as their original family.
Then I photographed Corky and David with all three grandsons.

At this Willamsburg family session, I made sure to capture each grandparent with their grandkids!
Our last photos were of Rosa and Jonathan together. In one particular photo of them kissing, you can absolutely see how strong they both are. Rosa was an owner of the S.L.A.M. Newport News, and Jonathan is active-duty Army. They are both very active, and their boys are too.
This family is incredibly special to me. I was beyond sad when it was time to say “see you later” at the end of our Colonial Williamsburg family photoshoot. I love my Army families so much, and I’m hoping we can plan another session together soon!
